Nissan Auto Recalls and Defects

The Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. is one of the oldest auto manufacturers in the world, founded in 1933. They are currently the sixth-largest automaker in the world, and they have at times been the single largest car manufacturer in North America. They are currently the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles. Although Nissan vehicles regularly score well in safety ratings, the company nevertheless has a history of selling vehicles with damaging, dangerous defects.

Regulators and Nissan owners have discovered a wide range of defects leading to high-profile recalls, everything from brake failure to door failure, battery failure, and fire risks. We’ve compiled a list of several recent recalls and defects below. Check your vehicle identification number on the Nissan website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to determine if your vehicle is or was subject to a recall. If you bought or leased a Nissan and discovered a serious defect, or if your Nissan auto is subject to a recall, you have important legal rights. The Lemon Law attorney at Nita Lemon Law Firm is here to help.

2016-2019 Infinity, Maxima, Pathfinder and Murano: Brake Failure/Fire Risk

In November 2019, Nissan issued a recall for close to 400,000 cars in the United States based on a defect in the braking system of certain vehicles. The brake system was defectively designed to allow brake fluid to leak into the internal circuit boards, creating the risk of a fire. The leak should trigger a warning to drivers, which should prompt any Nissan drivers to take their vehicle to a dealership immediately for repair or replacement.

The recall covered Maxima sedans in model years 2016-2018, Infiniti QX60 luxury crossovers years 2017-2019, Murano SUVs years 2015-2018, and Pathfinder SUVs model years 2017-2019. If you own or lease a Nissan covered by the recall and you have not had the brake system reviewed, it’s important to get the vehicle reviewed.

2019 Altima: Fire Risk

Nissan recalled close to 24,000 Altima sedans after discovering that an incorrectly installed fuel hose gave rise to a fire risk. As manufactured, the hose prevents the fuel from distributing properly, which can cause engine stalling. The hose may also lead to a fuel leak, giving rise to the risk of catching fire.

2021 Rogue and Rogue Sport: Child Restraint Defects

Nissan issued a recall for 4,083 2021 Rogue Sport vehicles based on a risk that the seat belt automatic locking retractor might deactivate early. Should the locking retractor deactivate early, installed child seats would become less secure and at greater risk in the event of a crash. Nissan further recalled over 47,000 2021 Rogue vehicles because the second-row seatback frames were improperly welded, preventing child seats from being effectively secured.

2020-2021 Titan, Titan XD, Versa: Turn Signal Failure

Nissan recalled over 30,000 model years 2020-2021 Titan, Titan XD, and Versa vehicles. The recall was based on the turn signal bulbs in both front turn signal lights, which are prone to cracking and failing to illuminate. If a turn signal fails to illuminate, other motorists will not be alerted to the Nissan driver’s intent to turn, creating a serious risk of a crash.

2022 Pathfinder: Multiple Seat Defects

Nissan has issued two separate recalls for model year 2022 Pathfinder SUVs. The recalls concern the construction of the seats in the second and third rows which, as-built, are prone to separation or detachment. Close to 6,000 2022 Pathfinders were built with second-row seatback frames containing insufficient welds which may separate, failing to adequately restrain occupants during a crash. As many as 10,000 2022 Pathfinders are also designed with faulty headrests in the third row due to improper welding or misaligned internal components which allow the headrest to suddenly detach, in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
