Chevrolet Auto Recalls and Defects

Chevrolet, colloquially called Chevy, is a division of the General Motors Company (GM). Chevrolet is an American auto manufacturer that sells cars, trucks, and SUVs worldwide. Chevy’s parent company, GM, is the largest automaker in the U.S. and either the largest or second-largest automaker in the world, often swapping the first-place title with Toyota depending on the year. Chevrolet alone sells close to 1.5 million vehicles in the U.S. annually and a similar number worldwide.

Chevy markets itself as an all-American car and truck brand, building reliable vehicles that last. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Over the years, Chevy cars, trucks, and SUVs have been subject to many recalls pertaining to harmful and dangerous defects. Chevy vehicles have been recalled for everything from faulty fuel tanks to headlight malfunctions and defective airbags. Drivers of Chevrolet vehicles built with hazardous defects are at risk of serious injury and often deserve Lemon Law compensation for the harm they have suffered.

Below, we’ve compiled details on a number of Chevy recalls issued over the last few years. If you own any of the affected models or suspect your Chevrolet might be subject to a recall, check your vehicle identification number on the Chevy website or the NHTSA database. If you bought or leased a Chevrolet and discovered a significant defect, if your Chevrolet is subject to a recall, or if you were injured because of a defective Chevrolet, you have important legal rights. The Lemon Law attorney at Nita Lemon Law Firm is ready to help.

2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500: Fuel Tank Malfunction and Engine Stall

In early 2023, GM announced a recall of more than 22,000 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles equipped with a dual fuel tank option. Model years 2017-2019 of the Chevrolet Silverado might have been built with a fuel tank prone to collapse, which would prevent the tank from transferring fuel to the front tank and lead to an engine stall. An engine stall during motion, especially on the highway or freeway, can lead to a catastrophic accident and serious injury for anyone involved.

Owners and lessees of the affected vehicles should receive notice by late March and can obtain free repairs from Chevy dealerships.

2021-2022 Chevrolet Equinox: Fuel Pump Malfunction

Owners and lessees of the 2021-22 model Chevy Equinox should also receive notice of a fuel pump-related recall in March 2023. These compact SUVs, along with the 2022 GMC Terrains, were built with a fuel pump module that could fail to provide enough fuel to the engine. As with the earlier model Silverados, if the Equinox engine is not provided with enough fuel during a drive, the engine can unexpectedly stall and a serious crash can occur. Owners and lessees can contact a Chevy dealer to arrange for repairs.

2017-2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV: Fire Risk

Owners of Chevy’s electric vehicle brand are also at risk of serious injury due to hazardous defects. Model years 2017-2023 of the Chevy Bolt EV were built with a faulty seat belt pretensioner. The pretensioner is the device that tightens the seat belt in the event of a crash. The Bolt’s pretensioner exhaust, however, is at risk of igniting carpet fibers in the vehicle after a crash. If the carpet is ignited, the vehicle at large can catch fire, drastically increasing the risk of serious injury after a crash. Over 111,000 Bolt EVs were covered by the recall.

Owners should have been notified of the defect and recall by late January or early February 2023 and can obtain repairs from a local Chevy dealership. If you own a Chevy EV, make sure your vehicle is fitted with the proper repairs in order to avoid a spontaneous fire that could hurt you or your family.

2013-2017 Chevrolet Traverse: Faulty Air Bag

GM issued a recall of several Buick Enclaves and Chevy Traverse vehicles because of concerns regarding the built-in airbags. Specifically, the driver-side airbag inflator is at risk of exploding during deployment because of a manufacturing defect. If the bag fails to deploy, it will be of little help to the driver in the event of a crash. Moreover, if the bag explodes, it can send sharp metal fragments flying into the vehicle, striking the driver or other occupants and causing serious injury or death. If you own or lease a covered vehicle, make sure the airbag issue has been resolved by a Chevy dealer.
